Kook-Hee Gil is Reader (Associate Professor) in Applied Linguistics at the University of Sheffield. Formally trained in theoretical linguistics at the University of Edinburgh, her earlier work spans syntax and semantics, encompassing binding, scrambling, floating quantifiers, and wh-indefinites. She has since extended her research to second, third, and heritage language acquisition across a typologically diverse range of languages, including English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, and Indonesian, with publications in leading journals such as Second Language Research and Studies in Second Language Acquisition. Since 2010, she has been at the forefront of a new research agenda that bridges formal linguistic/acquisition research and language education through structured knowledge exchange between researchers and language teachers — an endeavour to make linguistics a more meaningful and impactful contributor to language teaching and teacher education.
