2020 WORKSHOP

14th March: Workshop on “Linguistics and Language Teaching: Grammar in the Foreign Language”, within the framework of the research programme “Linguistics and Grammar Teaching”, Department of English Language & Literature and Department of German Language & Literature, NKUA.

Description: Grammar Teaching has been one of the most discussed and controversial issues in Foreign Language Teaching. The discussion about Grammar focuses both on the question whether and how it should be taught, mainly aiming at developing the appropriate methodological tools, and on the question of what is being taught, i.e. on the description of the language system itself.

In this educational – scientific workshop, we draw our attention on both aspects. On the one hand, we deal with the description of selected grammatical phenomena on the basis of principles provided by Theoretical Linguistics, using the findings of comparative linguistic analysis as well. On the other hand, we examine and propose ways of introducing and teaching these phenomena within the communicative framework, implementing current practices of teaching scenarios.

The workshop, in its theoretical and practical part, attempts to connect Theoretical Linguistics and Didactics, investigating the ways in which the findings of linguistic studies can be implemented in Foreign Language Grammar Teaching in primary and secondary education, and aims at aiding teachers as well as students and prospective educators in their teaching practice.

The Principal Investigators
